We Would Rather You Understood the Quote

That last part is not a marketing angle. It came out of the job. Almost every homeowner who calls with two quotes in hand is comparing two numbers that describe two different products, and nobody has told them which parts of the door those numbers are buying.

The Three Numbers Nobody Prints

Steel gauge, insulation type, and spring cycle rating. Those three decide most of how a door ages, and a surprising number of quotes list none of them.

Gauge is the one that trips people up, because the scale runs backwards. Thinner steel gets a higher number. A 27 gauge skin and a 21 gauge skin can carry the same paint, the same panel pressing and the same warranty language, and one of them will still be showing dents in three years.

Insulation gets sold as a single word. Polystyrene board and foamed polyurethane are both called insulated and they are not the same thing at all. Spring cycle rating almost never gets mentioned, which is convenient, because a spring rated for 10,000 cycles and one rated for 25,000 cycles look identical hanging on a shaft.

What the Coast Does to a Door

Being a couple of miles from the water changes the priority list. The skin is rarely what fails first here. Springs, hinges, fasteners, roller bearings and the track take the damage, because salt in the air finds bare steel and untreated plating long before it does anything visible to a powder coated panel.

So when we talk about upgrades on a Huntington Beach opening, we usually start with galvanised springs, coated cables, sealed bearing rollers and decent fasteners, and only then talk about the door itself. It is less exciting and it is where the money goes furthest.

When We Tell People Not to Spend

Regularly. The highest R value door on the shelf is hard to justify in this climate, and we will say so rather than sell it. Daytime temperatures here move a garage maybe fifteen degrees, so the insulation argument for a heavy foamed door is weak.

The rigidity argument is not. Foamed polyurethane bonds the skins into a stiff panel, which makes the door quieter, straighter and less prone to bowing. That is a real benefit and it is worth paying for. We would just rather you bought it for the correct reason.
